From Our Home to Yours : The Roots of Earthen Living

Updated: Jan 26

The story of Earthen Living doesnt begin with a loud announcement or a modern launch campaign.

Rather, It begins quietly, in the soft light of a Mysore afternoon in 1914, with a young man named B.V.Pundit and a commitment to healing that has not yet wavered.

The Student and the Maharaja

In 1908, the Maharaja of Mysore established the regions first Ayurvedic college to help encourage and protect a wisdom that was losing its pace with the modern world. Among the first batch of students was B.V. Pundit, a young man guided more by instinct than opportunity.

His education didn't just happen in a classroom; but also on the fertile slopes of the surrounding Chamundi Hills. There, he spent hours hand-picking herbs, drying them on verandas, and grinding them with a patient discipline that refused to be hurried. Every remedy was prepared with a quiet discipline and a deep respect for nature as his medicine.

The Wisdom of the Bicycle

When B.V. Pundit opened his modest clinic in 1913, his mission was deeply rooted in ethics;

to provide authentic care that was accessible to everyone. To build trust in a world moving towards modern medicine, he took to his bicycle, travelling personally from house to house through local communities.

He wasn't just delivering remedies; he was offering his presence. He would sit with families, explaining the "why" of the herbs, speaking of Ayurveda not just for them alone but the entire family. He built a community rooted in care rather than commerce. He treated everyone with the same humility, accepting whatever they could offer - coins from some and simple coconuts from others, all tokens of gratitude that he valued more than any currency.

The "Toothpowder Express"

His first gift to the world was a simple toothpowder made from paddy husk. Because it was crafted with such honesty and efficacy it became popular very quickly. It became a staple in local households, so much so that a local train carrying it to neighboring towns was fondly nicknamed the "Toothpowder Express". Trust moved with that train, and the legacy began to take root.

One product became many. A new community was developing.

Over the years several insitutions conferred several honorary titles upon him-

"Bhishagratna " a gem among physicians

" Ayurveda Bhaskara " - a light of Ayurevdic knowledge were only a few. The Maharaja acknowledged his contribution towards community health.

His entire practice was centres around one ethos :

Just as every plant in the world holds medicinal value, every person holds something precious to offer. True healing lies in helping one another bring out that value"

An Unbroken Lineage

Today, Earthen Living in the UK is an a continuation of that same line . The distance has changed, but the intent has not. Though the remedies now cross continents rather than traveling by local train or a bicycle, the intent has never shifted. Our products are still an echo of those early formulations -simple, thoughtful and created with an unbroken respect for nature.

We share this heritage without flourish, believing that true wellbeing should be honest, accessible, and offered with the same sincerity that shaped its beginning over a century ago.

We invite you to become a part of this story, where every herb is a bridge to a simpler, more honest way of living.

So lets slow down, listen and return to what has always known how to heal - our inner self.
